Greening Up Demos
A Zero Carbon/Zero Waste workplace?
We're committed to being an environmentally-friendly organisation. With all the travel we're doing, it's not going to be easy. We want to share our experiences and efforts at going green on this page - with the ultimate aim of becoming a zero carbon/zero waste workplace.
Our Carbon Footprint
4:19pm Monday, 7th August 2006
As promised a while back on the Greening Up Demos page of the website, we've attempted to work out how many tonnes of CO2 our flights in 2006 will produce.
This involved inputting individually every work flight taken by Demos members of staff into the Carbon Neutral website's Carbon Calculator - not a light (nor particularly fun) task, and many thanks to Liam Harvey for taking this on.
So, (drum roll please) by the end of 2006 we can expect to have generated 70 tonnes of CO2 through our flying activities. Considering that last month alone saw researchers in America, Zimbabwe and China for the Cultural Diplomacy, Nanodialogues and Atlas of Ideas projects respectively, I'm not hugely surprised by this total - and would be interested to see how it compares with that of other organisations.
Now - the next stage is to offset these emissions, and we're looking at a variety of ways to do this, and would appreciate all suggestions ... expect more postings to follow on the matter.

On an other note, several organisations, such as Carbon Neutral and Climate Care, offer the possibility of buying offsets, in the form of sustainable development projects, efficiency projects, and tree planting.
As I was walking to lunch with another intern the other day, I noticed a cab from Xeta , which advertises itself as a carbon neutral taxi company. Which led me to discover that RadioTaxis black cab company was the first one in the world to go neutral ... With a combined fleet of about 3400 vehicles, it shouldn't be too difficult to catch one of those most of the time.
